The ultimate goal of an Interior Designer is to create comfortable spaces along with a visual delight, spaces that can be relished for a long time by people who live in them. This is achieved by logically taking into account multiple factors such as utility, budget, architecture, etc.

In order to fulfil the ‘visual’ purpose, keeping track of the Horizontal and Vertical Lines – which serve as the foundations of Interior Design - is a must. They are needed more for creating visual balance and accentuating certain spaces. Horizontal and Vertical lines shift the viewers’ attention respectively towards the Perimeter and the Height of the room. Where the most important purpose of Horizontal lines is to welcome and lure one to stay in that place, that of Vertical lines is to make a statement via inserting unique pieces of decoration suited to one’s style. Some examples are:

Horizontal lines: upholstery, sofa-backs, beds, bookshelves, mantels, dining tables, etc.

Vertical lines: curtains, candlesticks, lamps, chandeliers, armoires, columns, indoor plants, doorways and windows, etc.

A third kind is the Diagonal lines, which are used to dramatize the design.

Balancing between the above three are the Curved lines – which come with enormous potential for innovation - that are used to add a smooth touch.

Coming to the physical elements, the focus first goes on the Walls, which provide one with the largest area customizable. Painting them is the least expensive, and is used to add depth and texture. If one does not wish to keep it that simple, then Wallpapers come to your aid. Further texturing and stylizing can be brought about with the help of Wall Surfacing materials. Another option is to not add anything extra to the wall and let the material of the wall alone be sufficient, for example Stone Walls.

The Floor is the next area to design. Like the Walls, this can also be either covered or kept natural. Another popular option is to use cement over the floor and install Quarry Tiles. A stylish element can be brought in with Wooden flooring.

The Ceiling effects the whole design, and hence needs to be designed carefully. The texture can be given with the help of paint or wood.

The above three areas are the most important elements of Space, which is the basic component of Inter Designing and also includes doors, windows, and other supporting features such as Beams.

Apart from Space and Lines as discussed above, the other ‘Elements’ of Interior Designing are:

  •       Colour:

Colours are symbolic in nature and provide meaning to various things. They can highly influence the appearance and apparent size of a room – lighter and darker shades make the room look bigger and smaller respectively - and also people’s mood. Choice of shades varies from Cool to Warm, depending upon the purpose of the room.

  •    Light:

The lighting should complement the paint(s) and texture(s) in the room, in order to complete the look. Also, the lights can vary according to different moods, for example, bright lights for halls whereas dim lights for a calming and cosy atmosphere. For Focused illumination, Lamps, Accent Lights and Task lights are used. Suitable lights are now also being installed inside cabinets and shelves.

  •      Furniture:

This is an integral part of the design, and should be chosen according to its function, durability, quality, size, shape, colour, comfort, and of course the fact that it should match the rest of the decor.

Having expounded the ‘Elements’ of Interior Design, we come to the major ‘Principles’ that contribute towards an excellent design. These are:

  •      Unity:

What needs to be kept in mind throughout the design process is that your home should come out as a ‘unified whole’, as one single composition. In order to achieve this, all the differing places within the home and within a room should work in harmony with each other.

  •      Rhythm:

‘Rhythm’ in music is the pulse with which a musical composition proceeds, and it needs to be maintained for a certain period of time so as to be recognized, which is achieved via repetition of a small element. Similarly, Rhythm in Interior Design is important for capturing the essence of the design, and is obtained via repetition of Visual patterns and design schemes.

  •       Balance:

Visual weight should be proportionately distributed in a room. This Balance can be either Symmetrical – that is, the repetition of same objects on both sides of a vertical axis – or Asymmetrical – which is achieved by placing disparate objects of equal Visual weight. The use of Symmetrical distribution is decreasing now, as the Modern world has a greater inclination towards Asymmetrical distribution, which, even though being more difficult to bring about, is more authentic.

  •      Proportion:

It refers to the measurement of the size of an object as compared to a mentally set out parameter or in comparison to the size of another object present in the same space.

  •       Focal Point:

Focal points are necessary to keep one’s interest maintained. It functions by being attractive enough to draw attention towards itself and yet curious enough to inspire one towards further exploration. In order to avoid boredom, there can be more than one Focal Point.

  •       Details:

Though minor detailing of objects does not immediately come into notice, it plays a very significant role in the overall impact, and hence should be done carefully.

Interior Design of a particular space is not limited to one style, and is very likely to be a mixture of more than one. However, the multiple styles that are used should work in tandem with each other so as to accomplish a perfect design.

The various Elements and Principles of Interior Design highlighted above is not an exhaustive list and should not be taken as rules that ought to be followed under whatsoever circumstances. At the end, designing is all about creativity and freedom. The only condition to be maintained is that it should be feasible and logical, yielding desirable results, which the above described aspects might help bring to fruition.

Interior designers in Gurgaon – who can amicably handle all kinds of projects such as Residential, Hospitality, Institutional, Commercial, etc. - take into consideration all the factors discussed above, and hence serve as an amiable choice; which is proved by the fast pace with which the place is developing.
