How to Clean a Water Storage Tank

Cleanliness is next to Godliness! Availability of clean water is a growing concern for many. While we spend a lot of time to select an appropriate water filter, we forget about the cleanliness of the water storage tank. Contamination of water can happen right in your own storage tank. Just because it is out of sight…it cannot be out of mind! Water tanks therefore should be cleaned at least once or twice a year to remove the grime build-up. Let’s understand the basics of how to clean a water storage tank.

Cleaning up the Drinking Water Storage Tank

Before you begin the process, you need to close the valve that connects to the water line. In the meantime, drain all the water from the tank. Using help from a professional service or with the help of a hose, clean the insides of the tank. The pressure should be high enough to remove all the dirt and grime that has built up over time on the tank walls. Once the washing process is complete, drain it. In case of stubborn grime, a vacuum process may be required.

Next, use clean water to rinse the insides of the tank. Repeat the draining process. Now, you need to add a cleansing agent. Most professional services will have readymade solutions, but in case you haven’t hired one, use *liquid bleach.

Fill the tank with clean water. Add the cleansing agent. Open the valve that connects to the distribution line. Allow the water to flow till it fills completely. Open the water taps and let water run. You can collect this water for other uses such as cleaning or washing. Once you sense the smell of chlorine, close the taps. Let the tank contain the medicated water for 5 hours and then drain the tank water. Fill with clean water. Open the valve again. Open all the water taps and let the water flow. Wait till the smell of chlorine fades away.

Check with local professional services that can ease out the cleaning process.
